Mtskheta — half day

The easiest and most rewarding short trip. Just 30 minutes north of Tbilisi, Mtskheta is the country's ancient spiritual capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Two cathedrals — Svetitskhoveli in the town and Jvari Monastery on the hilltop opposite — and a riverside walk at the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers.

Kazbegi — full day

The iconic mountain day trip. Stepantsminda and Gergeti Trinity Church under Mount Kazbek, 3 hours each way along the Georgian Military Highway. See the dedicated Tbilisi to Kazbegi guide.

Sighnaghi and Kakheti — full day

2 hours east of Tbilisi, Sighnaghi is the walled "town of love" overlooking the Alazani Valley. Combine with Bodbe Monastery and a winery visit (Khareba, Pheasant's Tears, or any family cellar) for a perfect day in Georgia's wine country. Best done with a driver or a small group tour.

Uplistsikhe cave city — half/full day

1.5 hours west of Tbilisi, Uplistsikhe is an ancient rock-hewn town carved into a sandstone cliff. Inhabited since the early Iron Age, it makes a great half-day stop on the way to Borjomi or Kutaisi, or a full day combined with Gori (Stalin's birthplace and its museum).

Vardzia and Borjomi — full long day

Vardzia is the most spectacular cave monastery in Georgia, carved into the side of Mount Erusheti in the 12th century by Queen Tamar. It is 3.5 hours from Tbilisi, often combined with Borjomi spa town and the Rabati Castle in Akhaltsikhe. Ambitious as a day trip — better as a 2-day loop, but doable in summer with an early start.

David Gareja monastery complex — full day

2 hours south-east of Tbilisi in the semi-desert near the Azerbaijani border, David Gareja is a complex of cave monasteries founded in the 6th century. The Lavra and the Udabno cave church are the highlights. Note: the border is unmarked here — stick with a guide and stay on the Georgian side.
